چکیده

In (Modern) Greek, velar consonants become palatalized before front vowels following an allophonic rule. In many southern dialects, the variants that result from palatalization further undergo softening in this same position. While velar softening is well-documented in Greek dialectology studies, most previous work is based on impressionistic data. In the present study, several acoustic and psychoacoustic measures were applied to examine the characteristics of velar palatalization/softening in voiceless plosives of two regional varieties of the language: a ‘nonsoftening’ dialect spoken in Thessaloniki and a ‘softening’ dialect spoken in Crete. The effects of speaker’s sex, word position, and stress placement on velar palatalization/softening were also examined. The results provided acoustic evidence of velar softening in the Cretan dialect. We also found an influence of sex, word position, and stress on the extent of velar softening.

Acoustics and perception of velar softening for unaspirated stops

This paper provides articulatory, acoustic and perceptual data in support of the hypothesis that the velar softening process through which /k/ becomes /tP/ is based on articulation rather than on acoustic equivalence if operating on unaspirated stops. Production data for unaspirated /k/ are analyzed for five speakers of Majorcan Catalan, where the velar stop phoneme exhibits (alveolo)palatal or...

Effects of Two Linguistically Proximal Varieties on the Spectral and Coarticulatory Properties of Fricatives: Evidence from Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek

Several studies have explored the acoustic structure of fricatives, yet there has been very little acoustic research on the effects of dialects on the production of fricatives. This article investigates the effects of two linguistically proximal Modern Greek dialects, Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek on the temporal, spectral, and coarticulatory properties of fricatives and aims to determine th...

Anticipatory Coarticulation of Labialized Velars as a Precursor to Sound Change

Phonetic evidence is presented to contribute to a possible explanation of how historical coronalization of labialized velars in front vowel environments may take place. Sound changes of labialized velar /kw/ to coronal /t/ before front vowels /i, e/ are reconstructed for the development of Greek from Indo-European. Philological accounts tend to propose progressive fronting/palatalization preced...

The Acoustic and Visual Phonetic Basis of Place of Articulation in Excrescent Nasals

One common historical development in languages with distinctively nasalized vowels is the excrescence of coda velar nasals in place of nasalized vowels. For example, the dialect of French spoken in the southwestern part of France (Midi French) is characterized by words ending in the velar nasal [N] where Parisian French has nasalized vowels and no final nasal consonant ([savO) ]~[savON] "soap")...

Articulatory reduction and coarticulation in Catalan three-consonant sequences.

Electropalatographic and acoustic data on Catalan /Ck#C/ sequences where # is a word boundary and /k/ is preceded by /l, s, r/ and followed by /b, m, d, l, n, z, r, ʎ/ were collected in order to test the hypothesis that the velar stop is most prone to be reduced and deleted next to consonants involving high articulatory and aerodynamic demands. Analysis results reveal the absence of a velar sto...
